Each year, countless Atlanta Falcons fans pore over every name on the roster to prepare for the coming season

. For many of the players, especially the starters, fans know their hometown, college, college stats, past season stats, injuries and blood type (okay, maybe not that last one). The most diehard fans may even be memorizing similar details about the names on the coaching staff.

Interestingly enough, though, a group that makes a huge difference on the team is generally completely overlooked. These are the names behind the football operations. Below is a little about a few of the men who do the behind-the-scenes work for the Atlanta Falcons, helping to give those with Atlanta Falcons tickets a top experience every season.

Thomas Dimitroff, General Manager: Dimitroff has been with the Falcons since 2008. Since then, he has been key in helping the team land players like Pro Bowl running back Michael Turner, star quarterback Matt Ryan and standout tight end Tony Gonzalez. He has made a reputation in the NFL for his ability to pinpoint top talent, but his story actually begins in the Canadian Football League. His father was a coach in the CFL, and Dimitroff started as the Canadian Scouting coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1990. He soon started transitioning into the NFL and became an area scout for the Detroit Lions in 1994. Since then, he has held positions with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

Nick Polk, Director of Football Administration: Polk has a wide range of experience that has taken him all over the world. His coaching career began as an executive assistant at Southern Connecticut. On his path to the NFL, he served as the head coach for Lock Haven University, his alma mater. He was also the graduate assistant coach for secondary, defensive line and linebackers at James Madison University. From 2003-2004 he made his transition into the NFL ranks, serving on their diversity committee as an instant replay communicator and other roles. He was also the Director of Football Operations for NFL Europa.

Kevin Winston, Senior Director of Player Development: 2010 marks Kevin Winston's fifth season with the Atlanta Falcons, and he has made quite an impact during that time. He has helped the Falcons acquire many accolades for encouraging and facilitating players' interests, philanthropy and business outside of football. Prior to his time with the Falcons, Winston was in the player development department for the New York Jets for five years. While there, he also helped the Jets win much recognition for their player development.

Karl Pierburg, Director for Football Systems: Pierburg has even more experience than Winston, with 2010 signaling his sixth season in Atlanta. He got his start as a Mathematics and Computer Science major at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he also lettered in football. Prior to his time with the Falcons, Pierburg was the IT Manager for Football Systems with the Chicago Bears, helping the Bears create a detailed system for all their area scouts.
