When these nuclear reactions takes place at a controlled rate that is controlled chain reaction, the energy liberated can be regulated and can be used for a good purpose such as power generation by installing nuclear reactors. But if we cant able to control the rate of fission or, a large amount of energy will be liberated in a in a short period of time and such a process is called uncontrolled chain reaction which will leads to powerful blast which happens in the nuclear bomb.

The common types of nuclear bombs works on the nuclear fission process and they use U-235 or Pu-239 as nuclear fuels.Such bombs are called as fission bombs, atomic bombs or atom bombs.

Let take an example the atom bomb that dropped on the Hiroshima had an Enriched uranium percentage of greater than 90% of U-235.

The fuel elements for nuclear reactor are assembled in a way that they will allow many neutrons to get absorbed, without trigger to uncontrolled fission reaction.While in manufacturing the atomic bombs the nuclear fuel is assembled in such a compact manner that the chance of leaking of neutron is much less and the reaction is uncontrolled chain reaction will occur.This leads to the extremely fast generation of energy.

The energy yielded of an atomic weapon during explosion will be in kilo tones. One fact is that a complete fission of 1 gram of Uranium-235 releases 8.3*10^7 KJ of energy. This is equivalent to the energy released in an explosion of 17 tones of explosive TNT.Thus ,1KG of uranium 235 in a nuclear weapon will yield an energy equivalent to 17 kilo tones of TNT.

The Hazardous Effects of Atomic Bomb Explosion

The huge amount of heat generated creates an enormous fire ball which can burn down a medium size city. Shock waves results from the atomic bomb explosion leads to flatten buildings within several kilometers, and the emitted radioactive materials released during the blast covers a large area causing nuclear radiation for a long time. A large number of people are instantly killed with the direct effect of the atomic bomb explosion whereas others can get blinded due to the brilliant flash of the nuclear explosion, and a large number of human beings who survived from the blast suffer from radiation illness.
