Atopic Rhinitis:

Atopic rhinitis is far more common than one might expect (especially once you realize what the phrase refers to)

. Atopic rhinitis pertains to a hereditary tendency to have immediate allergic reactions (like asthma or vasomotor rhinitis) because of the presence of an antibody in the skin (and sometimes the presence of an antibody in the bloodstream).

The term atopic refers to having an inherited predisposition to allergies. The word is frequently used interchangeably with the word allergic even though not all allergies have a genetic aspect. Atopic rhinitis can be either a seasonal or year-round allergic condition. It is marked by sneezing, runny nose, and/or congestion. It is the most common type of allergy.

Allergies in general affect a vast majority of the modern population. Many believe that lifestyle choices made by society throughout the years has drastically increased the general citizen's susceptibility to allergic reaction. While this may be true...experts are still researching the problem. Expert treatment can focus on decreasing the frequency and severity of symptoms while continued testing can often pinpoint the root cause/s of the problem.

Atopic rhinitis is not only common...it is also frequently a chronic condition. The allergic sensitivity is usually to a common substance or multiple common substances. Many of the allergens identified as the trigger for the condition are airborne, making it difficult for patients suffering from this type of atopic rhinitis to avoid future episodes through preventive avoidance measures.

Treatment options include:

1. Normal saline use for nasal irrigation

2. Alkaline nasal use for nasal irrigation and removal of crusts

3. Application of 25% glucose in glycerine to nasal mucosa to inhibit growth of proteolytic organisms that can emit a foul odor

4. Local antibiotics (i.e. Kemicetine, Chloramphenicol, Ostradiol, Vit D2

5. Ostradiol spray

6. Systemic streptomycin

7. Injection of placental extract into the submucosa

8. Oral potassium iodide

9. Surgical intervention: Young's operation (or modified Young's operation), medical displacement of lateral wall of the nose/narrowing of the nasal cavities, transposition of parotid duct, etc.
