Attorneys: Leave That Jealous Mistress!
When we're in law school our lives are devoted to studying
, graduating, passing the bar and getting that first job in a real law firm. This leaves little time for anything else, like starting a family or enjoying life. But this is only true for lawyers who don't understand that you can be a successful lawyer AND a successful human being at the same time.
Decide What's Important To You
Is your life your job? Do you love spending 13-hour days at your desk? Do 80-hour work weeks appeal to you? If so, stop reading here, because I'm concerned with the people who DON'T want that sort of life. Believe me, it's far too easy to get consumed in your legal career to that point. If you're happy with those kinds of hours, you don't need my help in getting them.
I'm speaking to you, the lawyer who wants to be around to watch their kids grow up, or be able to take a weekend vacation without worrying that the office will have collapsed on itself by Monday. There are two major things that can help you obtain this: trustworthy staff and good legal marketing.
Hiring the Right Staff
A big part of being a successful lawyer is having a super team that you know you can trust to keep things running when you're not there. One of the biggest reasons lawyers burn out is because they think that THEY have to oversee everything that goes on in their office. If you can't trust your staff to know what they're doing, why hire them in the first place?
You should be surrounding yourself with the same kind of trustworthy, hard-working people that you are. This isn't limited to your clerical staff; I'm talking partners as well. Make sure that you're in a law firm that involves lawyers who share your idea of what it means to be a lawyer. If they're of the "the law practice comes first" mindset, you may find it harder to get them to understand that you can be a successful lawyer while still having a life outside the office.
Legal Marketing to Serve Your Lifestyle
Developing and implementing a legal marketing system that essentially runs itself is your key to unlocking your free time. Instead of picking over ROI reports, profit analysis, the Yellow Pages ad pricing list, and other crazy marketing data analysis tools, you could be watching your website views go up, your client database grow, and your information packages be automatically generated and emailed.
The more of your legal marketing you automate, the less time you'll spend wondering if your methods are working. Successful lawyers make their legal marketing system work for them, bringing in new, ideal clients and eliminating a lot of the tedious work of finding the right clients for your firm.
With a good support team and legal marketing strategy, you'll be able to find that happy balance of work and life.
