It is usually not very difficult for the female of the species to attract males

. As a matter of fact, women have a remarkable advantage over men when it comes to courtship. In most species, it is up to the male to prove he is a worthy courtier. One of the reasons for this is that humans, as animals, secrete pheromone fragrances in order to draw members of the opposite sex to them. This is not necessarily something that you can sense in your awareness, but you may find yourself uniquely or mysteriously attracted or drawn to someone without ever having spoken to them.

Obviously, there are many different ways for women to attract males but the use of pheromone fragrances is subtle and more understated. While it would be very easy for a woman to use innuendo or suggestive clothing in order to make a guy pay attention to her, pheromones play on a more primitive need which actually has less to do with physical attraction and is more related to the survival of the species.

In animals, pheromones are chemicals which prompt a social or physiological response in members of the same species. They are secreted through the skin and picked up by sensory organs, typically of the olfactory sense. The brain then decodes the message hidden within. Pheromones can deliver many different kinds of messages, including: aggression, territory, alarm, direction, information, and many other things that are intended to alter behavior in some way. In animals, though, females can secrete a sex pheromone in order to attract males.

When females do this, males within the species understand that there is a viable candidate for procreation. Most animal species do not mate for life and only procreate for the purpose of furthering the species, but in humans, the realization of this chemical interaction can cause a person to start considering a relationship. This is not always the case, however, since each person responds to these varying chemicals in different ways.

Understanding this physiological and behavioral phenomenon, though, you can apply it to other areas of your life. Studies have shown, for instance, that certain foods and herbs can act as aphrodisiacs, which means that they can cause the body to react in a way that is similar to the sensing of sex pheromones. Taking their name from the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, aphrodisiacs can increase a person's sex drive and improve virility in men and fertility in women. You may be familiar with oysters and vanilla, two of the most commonly regarded aphrodisiacs. Oysters must be consumed to achieve the effect, while vanilla can be sensed as an aroma. Basil has similar properties in both senses, as do several other herbs.
