In online marketing there are many ways to generate web traffic, some of them are free, others you have to pay for. Let's take a closer look at some of the free marketing methods that I personally use as well, to increase the number of people visiting my websites.

1. Article Marketing

Do some keyword research and find a hand full of business related keywords and keyword phrases. Search for those words that have a high KEI and low competition. I personally use Wordtracker to do the job for me. Write articles about the keyword phrases you have found, repeat these phrases and or words a few times in your article to achieve a nice keyword density. Attracting visitors to your website and generate more website traffic through higher rankings in the search engines is achieved by not repeating your keyword phrases too much as it makes your article look unprofessional to the reader. Instead, be creative and use synonyms as well. Always check on the keyword density of your article! A good keyword density is about 3%-4%.

Make sure to include a link back to your own website at the bottom of the article somewhere so that people can find out more about your business. Once your article is good to go, post it to an article website like EzineArticles.com for instance. Effectively executing article marketing will surely generate website traffic.

2. Video Marketing

This free marketing method is very powerful for attracting visitors to your website. I love this method and Google loves video. Produce videos about business related topics using good keyword phrases. Make the title of your video the keyword phrase and include this also in the description of your video when you post it to a video website such as YouTube or MetaCafe. Also make sure to include a link to your own website. Implementing video marketing as part of your campaigns is very powerful and creates more traffic to your website.

3. Blogging

Certainly not a thing of the past but instead, an effective marketing method for attracting visitors to your website. It's easy and it's simple. Get an account on a blog site like WordPress or Blogger and start blogging. Post informational, valuable and useful stuff. Give people some extra added value on your blog. Perhaps some free stuff or giveaways like an eBook, or a free marketing training. Find like minded folks and share information. Try to generate curiosity in your blog so that the reader wants to know more about what it is you actually do. Effective blogging will generate website traffic, for sure.

4. Social Media Marketing

Attracting visitors to your website through Social Media Marketing is becoming more and more popular. Just like the ones described earlier, this is also a free marketing method. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and also MySpace are growing at the speed of light. It's a huge market. So, get an account with a social media site of your choice, I recommend Facebook, and set up a personal profile, include a picture of yourself, a little bit about yourself, what you do, and also include a link to your website. You are now ready to interact with other people. Make sure to keep your activities on social media sites SOCIAL. Don't throw your business into peoples faces, they won't like it and they will unfriend you if they consider you as spam. Worse case scenario is that you get reported and your account will be suspended. I personally post interesting things that are business related and of extra value to the people I am friends with on Facebook. But I also post personal things, funny stuff, pictures and videos. If you are serious about your business and you want to generate more website traffic, then you will want to get started with social media marketing right away.

Surely there are more free methods that you can use like free classified ads or engaging into forums for example. As far as the paid marketing methods for attracting visitors to your website there is pay per click and banner advertising.
