Dr Dixson, from Victoria University of Wellington studied minds of a group of volunteers. They were shown various pictures of a woman, where her hips, bust, and waist were digitally altered. He then asked them to rate the images for attractiveness. When the volunteers studied the images an infra-red camera used to tract the movement of their eyes. It was found that, despite most men being drawn initially to the woman's cleavages, it was her hips and waist that were in fact what they found most attractive. Men rate images with an hourglass shape and a slim waist as most attractive.

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of 0.7 is considered as a perfect body. Perhaps, it is likely that perfect 0.7 ratio sends a biological signal to men that that woman is most fertile and most likely to produce a healthy offspring. On the other hand women prefer slimy, less muscle bound and even slightly more effeminate male; that equate those physical trait with being more caring and gentle.

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips. It is calculated by measuring the smallest circumference of the natural waist, usually just above the belly button; and dividing by the hip circumference at its widest part of the buttocks or hip. The ratio is applied both to women and men. WHR 0.7 in woman and 0.9 in male are considered good from health point of view , less the ratio more good for the health of heart.

Women often fall prey to different devices those are advertised to shape up losing extra pounds around the waist and abdomen; and many times get cheated. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance for a low-level medical laser as the first noninvasive aesthetic device indicated for the circumferential reduction of the waist, hips, and thighs. Liposuction, an invasive method is available at present.

The system uses laser scanner to target fat cells with cold energy, emulsifying adipose tissue, which is then released into the interstitial space and passed naturally through the body. Increasing fiber and water intake may hasten the appearance of results.

Treatment consists of 40-minute session, three times a week. The laser is applied to the target areas on the waist, hips, and/or thighs; because no heat is applied to cause discomfort, patients can resume normal activities immediately. A minimum 2-weeks treatment period is recommended by the manufacturers of the device.
