Attukal Temple: Women's Sabarimala
The Attukal Temple is a place of religious devotion towards goddess Bhagavathy and is located in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. It is popularly described as Sabarimala of the Women, as women form the major portion of devotees.
The Goddess Parvathi is the main deity in this temple. She was married to Kovalan who was the son of a wealthy merchant. But he met a dancer and spent all his wealth on her forgetting his wife. But when he lost all his wealth, he went back to Kannagi. Then the only valuable thing that remained to be sold was her pair of anklets. Thus they decided to sell it and went to the king of Madurai for the purpose. At the same time, a similar pair of anklets was stolen from the Queen. Thus when he tried to sell it, he was mistaken for the thief and was decapitated by the king's soldiers.
Kannagi became furious in knowing the incident and rushed to the King with the second pair of anklet. She broke one of the anklets and it had rubies within while the Queen's had pearls in her. She thus cursed the city of Madurai and because of the power of her chastity it turned out to be true. She got salvation when the Goddess of the city appeared before her. On her way to Kodungalloor, she passed Attukal where she took the form of a little girl and found an old man was sitting on the banks of a stream. She went to him and asked whether he could help her cross it, the man took her home as she was alone but she disappeared. She then appeared in his dream and asked him to build a temple where he found 3 golden lines in his grove. He did the same. This is at the location of the present Attukal temple.
The temple is famous for the annual Attukal Pongala festival in which over a million of women take part. It is the greatest gathering of women on earth who come to defend their agonies by offering pongala to Attukal Bhagavati. Pongala is a purgation of emotion which results in figurative cleansing of the emotions leaving the mind calm and clean. AttukalPongalahas become a symbol of devotion and dedication to Devi, the Mother goddess and above all a celebration of womanhood. Pongala explores the inner chemistry of the body, mind and soul, thus recharging the devotee with a sublime happiness and makes her spiritually and mentally equipped to face the challenges of the future. It has also entered the Guinness Book of World Records twice as the largest gathering of women in the world.
