Auburn Tigers Football Traditions
Being a recent graduate of Auburn University and an avid Auburn Football fan, it is only natural to be a huge believer of the Auburn tradition that is an integral part of Auburn culture. A few of our most proudly held traditions include the rolling of Toomer's Corner after a win, tiger walk before the game, our mascot Aubie, the War Eagle battle cry, A- day, and football game pep rallies .
Auburn pep rallies have created a wonderful way to boost enthusiasm and excitement, with more than a couple thousand faculty, students, and fans pouring into the streets around Toomer's Corner . For a while, this tradition was given a miss by the city. However, the Student Government Association worked very hard with the City of Auburn to bring back this great tradition.
One of our dearly held traditions is tiger walk. Two hours before the beginnning of the game, fans line up from Donahue Drive all the way to the stadium, creating a column through which the players and coaches walk. This ritual began way back in the sixties when fans and students would gather around the football players as they walked from Sewell Hall down to the football stadium. As the years have gone by this ritual has become an integral part of game day activities, even making it's way into the official game day itinerary.
One subject of confusion surrounding Auburn Football is whether Auburn has two mascots or one No- Auburn has only one mascot. Our mascot is Aubie, a charismatic and mischievous tiger The eagle is a ritual that is a part of Auburn's famous battle cry, Warrrrr Eagle. It all began back in 1892 when Auburn was badly losing in a game against Georgia. A fan in the stands had an eagle who broke free and started circling the stadium and before we knew it everyone in the stands started to yell War Eagle. The loud cheering gave the Auburn football players the encouragement they needed and they ended up winning the game against georgia. Now as the eagle flies around the stadium at the start of every game, the crowd goes crazy yelling War Eagle!.
After any win, Toomer's Corner, at the corner of Magnolia and College Street, is rolled with tons of toilet paper! It is a beautiful site to see! It looks as if it's a white Christmas in the middle of October!.
Lastly, there is A-Day. the founder's day celebration which is where the football team plays a scrimmage and all Auburn enthusiasts can come to watch. A game like this gives all enthusiasts an opportunity to check out how awesome the Auburn players are playing that season .
These traditions bring the Auburn family together and make Auburn University what it is today.
