Audi was founded in 1909 by August Horch, in the same year August Horch was forced out of the company he had founded. The first Audi automobile, the Audi Type A 10/22hp (16 kW) Sport-Phaeton, was produced in 1910.

August Horch went about setting up a new car business using the Horch brand, his previous business partners weren't too happy about this and got a court order barring August Horch from using his own family name on his new cars.

The manner in which August Horch called his company Audi is quite interesting, after being barred from using Horch he called upon two of his business friends Paul and Franz Fikentscher for advice. Franz's son suggested to the 3 businessmen why not call it Audi, "Horch!" in German means "Hark!" or "hear", which is "Audi" in Latin. The first Audi car, the Type B, 10/28PS was produced early in 1910.

August Horch left the Audi Company in 1920 for a high position at the German ministry of transport, but he was still very much involved with Audi as a member of the board of trustees. In September 1921, Audi became the first German car manufacturer to present a left handed production car, the Audi Type K.

Audi as a brand have since grown, significantly in the UK. Audi has become a prestigious brand, producing reliable, stunning looking and quality vehicles ranging from super minis to SUVs. Audi is fairly new in the SUV market but Audi Plymouth reported an upsurge in the number of SUV enquiries they are receiving.
