August Festivals In Cyprus

There is a good selection of festivals taking place in Cyprus this August

, ranging in genres from music and theatre to wine. The Ancient Greek Drama Festival features performances of ancient dramas and comedies, all performed in Greek. Even if you cant understand the language, the productions are still worth going to see; you can absorb and learn much of the local culture and history as well as experiencing the Theatre of Citrium. The annual festival is organised by the Cyprus Theatre Organization, in conjunction with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

A popular festival is Limassol Wine Festival, and sees over 15,000 people flocking to the area to immerse themselves in ancient Greek culture (as well as wine!). The celebrations are in honour of the God of Wine, Dionysus, and the Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite. The festival dates back to 1961, and was designed to give locals and tourists the chance to relax and enjoy wine in a chilled out atmosphere. The laid-back feel of the event is reiterated by its slogan, Drink wine, it gives you life. Wine tastings are free of charge, allowing for people to try a variety of Cypriot wine and sample traditional dishes. There is also plenty of music and dancing for everyone to burn off all the calories they are consuming! The festival takes place in Limassol, which is Cypruss largest grape-producing region, also meaning there are plenty of wineries to visit on your holidays.

Throughout August, Village Festivals take place in Cyprus. This is where communities gather together and put on exhibitions showcasing art, crafts, flowers and even agriculture. They also come together to partake in dancing, listening to music and general eating and drinking. It is a great chance for locals to have fun and mingle, but also for visitors to get to know the local cultures, foods and traditions, and basically gain a flavour of true Cypriot life. The brilliant part is, because of the great holiday weather, you can stay outside late into the night and make the most of the warm evenings. Lefkara is famed for its embroidery and for its lace, so during the Village Festivals this is predominantly what it displays, whereas other villages display things like fruit and vegetables and some hold different festivals to mark the harvest of various produce.
