Dunsborough in Western Australia is one of the premier holiday destinations in the state

Dunsborough is under three hours from Perth and is famous for the surrounding wineries which offer some of the best wines in the world. These include Wise Winery, Happs Vineyard and Deep Woods Estate, among the 220 vineyards and 80 wineries in the Margaret River region; all within a half hour drive of Dunsborough and very impressive considering the first wines were produced in the region just 30 years ago.

The town overlooks Geographe Bay and is a haven of secluded beaches, walking trails and beautiful picnic spots. Because it faces north to the Indian Ocean, the beaches are calm and uncrowded, perfect for young families and those wanting to spend a day at the beach.

Families who have been to Dunsborough go back again and again because there is too much to do and see in just one trip. There is the chocolate factory which has huge bowls of chocolate for everyone to sample for free, and which does a wicked hot chocolate using fresh milk or white chocolate. There is the wildlife park where you can pat and feed kangaroos, get covered with butterflies and talk to talking birds as well as see dingoes, wombats and a huge selection of other native wildlife. It is a lovely place to have a picnic lunch while the kids explore.

Right in town are several great restaurants and it is easy to get a superb cup of coffee. Accommodation ranges from camping grounds to some spectacular luxury boutique resorts, such as the luxurious five star Quay West Resort Bunker Bay.

For fresh air and adventure, the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park is a must. It comprises just under 9000 hectares of sandy beaches, coastal vegetation, rocky headlands, several streams, coastal limestone and many caves which can be explored alone or with a tour guide. The coastal vegetation is low scrub in some areas and huge Karri forest, banksias and peppermint trees in others. It is a beautiful, rugged but traversable coast. There are walking tracks along the coast which can be walked in sections ranging from 3 to 12km per section.
