Authority And Lie

It is widely accepted that the authority is a concept which can be measured with different degrees and thus it is comparative

. Some people have more authority and some others have less authority. A recent research has revealed that the authority that a person possesses will directly influence his performance when he tells a lie.

This research has been conducted by Dnna Carney, an associate professor in the Columbia University. According to her research, the authority may help to alleviate the pressure that a person suffers when he tells a lie and hence increases their ability to cheat others. The professor divided the students who acted as the testees into two groups: the employers and the employees. At random, she gave half of them money, each one a check of 100 dollars. Then the students were enquired one by one to prove that they had not got the money. Anyone with the money, as long as he could persuade the professor that he had not got the money, would get the right to keep the check. The result of the experiment indicated that those employers with a check performed almost the same with those testees who really had not got the money, while the employees with a check were easier to be exposed than those employers. According to Donna, five indexes can be implied to judge whether one is telling a lie or not: to shrug one's shoulder unconsciously, to speed up when talking; the corticosteroid in ones saliva ascends, to have the cognitive impairment and to be depressed. While those great authority such as CEO, politicians etc will perform almost the same as those who tell the truth, however, those who are disadvantaged in authority, when telling a lie, will unconsciously perform differently from those who tell the truth.

Although in Danas experiment the testees were only students instead of those with real authority in society, Donna believed it was the virtual authority that had enabled them to perform so differently. Only the mere virtual authority could change the person with who enjoyed it so much, so it could not be hard to deduce the influence that the real authority may have on people. Thus, Donna concluded that the authority did help those liars to keep relatively calmer than those without the authority. So there is a close connection between the authority and the action of telling lies.
