Autism Treatment - Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency and Autism
Some things that are commonly prescribed for children with Autism are essential fatty acids
. Essential fatty acids have become a very common and important therapy for children on the Autism spectrum from the standpoint of replenishing the fatty acids that may be depleted, and this can be through the use of cod liver oil or general fish oil.
When I see a child who has thick, hard ear wax, to me that is an indication that the child may have a deficiency in essential fatty acids. An essential fatty acid test would be ideal for determining which fatty acid is deficient and needs to be supplemented. Testing would allow us to pinpoint whether the deficiency lies in DHA, or EPA or maybe the omega 6 oils. You cannot really be sure which is most deficient without a thorough testing of essential fatty acids. Great Plains Labs has the ability to assess for fatty acid depletion, as well as other labs around. The testing is critical to definitively determine the exact deficiency. So while we can make some assumptions about what is deficient in an individual on the Autism spectrum, we may not always know for sure without testing. But if you have heard from your doctor, maybe your child's pediatrician, that your child has very thick, hard ear wax, it is very possible that your child's essential fatty acid levels are depleted.
A common, easy way to supplement your child with essential fatty acids is to choose a fish oil that has both EPA and DHA in it. That will aid in the replenishment of essential fatty acids. And many children find supplementation with cod liver oil both easy and very beneficial. Individuals with Autism can benefit from cod liver oil not only because of the essential fatty acids that it contains but also due to the naturally occurring vitamin A that it has as well. Many children find 1 to 2 teaspoons a day of cod liver oil very helpful. Visual stimming can also be improved through the use of cod liver oil. Some children do not side glance as much and have reduced visual stimming once they receive cod liver oil. The appearance of hard, thick ear wax can be one clue as to an essential fatty acid deficiency from a physical examination perspective. Providing a supplement with essential fatty acids is appropriate in many of those cases.
