Autistic Support For Families: How To Spot The Early Signs

With cases of autism on the rise, it is uncertain whether this increase is due to

more people having autism or in fact the ability for it to be more easily diagnosed as awareness grows of the disability. However, it is difficult to answer this question for sure.

Getting autism diagnosed early on, preferably before 18 months, treatment can have a bigger impact and it can improve quality of life and reduce the stress levels for the individual and the family. Treatment can reduce the disorders effects and help your child learn, grow, and thrive. However, in some cases a third of families wait over 3 years for a confirmed diagnosis and this has prompted one in ten families to pay for a private analysis.

Autism is a closely related spectrum of related disorders with core symptoms. Those who may be diagnosed to some degree on the autism spectrum will have problems relating to social skills, empathy, communication, and flexible behaviour. The level of the disability and the combination of symptoms will vary largely from person to person.

Types of Autism Spectrum disorders

The spectrum disorders belong to a category of 5 childhood-onset conditions that are known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). The 3 most common PDDs include:

Autism

Aspergers Syndrome

Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

Childhood disintegrative disorder and Rett Syndrome are the other pervasive developmental disorders, but these are rare genetic disorders.

Getting a diagnosis can be a very confusing and stressful time for parents and the child and it is becoming more and more urgent that the health system improves their diagnostic methods.

How to spot the signs in babies, toddlers and young children

Parents will be in the best position to monitor their child from birth for any signs of autism developing and any changes or quirks in behaviour. Here are some early signs you can look for in your baby or toddler:

They dont make eye contact

Don't smile when smiled at.

Don't respond to his or her name or to the sound of a familiar voice.

Dont follow the gesture when you point things out.

Don't point or wave goodbye or use other gestures to communicate.

Dont follow objects visually.

Dont initiate or respond to cuddling.

Dont imitate your movements and facial expressions.

Dont make noises to get your attention.

Dont play with other people or share interest and enjoyment.

Dont reach out to be picked up.

Dont ask for help or make other basic requests.

Autism will involve various developmental delays these may not automatically point to autism but they might indicate a heightened risk so it is worth taking action if youre concerned, but do keep in mind that all children develop at different rates.

If you do have concerns or a gut feeling, dont be put off by a doctors wait and see approach. You want to catch it early so you may need to persist in order to get a diagnosis.
