Autumn can be the prettiest season of the year; the leaves colour and fall

, crunching underfoot and the air becomes crisp and cool. and if you have holiday left, then why not make the most of it? Europe is a great place to go, as cities across the continent put on festivals and displays to herald the Christmas period.

Paris is a great example. Until the 26th of September you can visit a series of gardens designed to embrace Shakespeare. Visit a midsummer night's dream or Macbeth against a stunning backdrop, used for theatrical productions in the warmer months,

Stockholm has an amazing film festival in the latter weeks of November, where you ca be subjected to Hollywood glamour with a Scandinavian backdrop. All the red carpet affairs are open to the general public, and some of the viewings are really unusual; for example the rocky horror show projected onto a large panel of ice for viewing.

Budapest is a beautiful city to visit, although decidedly cold in the autumnal months. The Budapest autumn festival throws together theatre, music, opera and arts. Visit the castle district of Buda and see some of the most stunning architecture, although ravaged by bombs in the war, all the buildings have been restored lovingly and you can see across the river the grand Pest.

Pompeii has always been a great attraction to people who enjoy history, but it has had a boon since the city installed lighting at the site, for tourists to explore after dark. An eerie prospect, it brings a much more haunted feel to a city already ensconced in death. Visit the ruined temples and empty houses, and see the true results of the exploding Vesuvius.
