Everywhere you look in Newmarket, there is something connected to the royal sport. With a history dating back to the 1600s, when the very first British race was run in the Suffolk town, the industry has grown through the centuries and today Newmarket is the undoubted powerhouse of Europe and the home of British horseracing.

An incredible 30 miles of paths have been created around Newmarket that allow the horses and riders access to and from the 2,500 acres of heath and woodland, dedicated to racing and training.

Racing takes place throughout spring, summer and autumn, and those who visit are a fantastic mixture of horseracing enthusiasts. Some will be visiting for the first time, while for others it will be an annual event perhaps for that special race or a much looked forward to day out with family and friends. Naturally, some will be hoping to make serious money depending on their luck!

The NatWest Rowley Mile is considered to be one of the most historic sporting venues in the world. Named after Old Rowley, a nickname given both to Charles II and his faithful hack, the Rowley Mile has hosted flat racing for three and a half centuries. The unique, straight Rowley Mile course is largely unchanged since that time now with the new stands and it is on this hallowed turf that the new champions emerge year after year.

During the Autumn season nine race days will be run on the most historic stretch of turf in the entire world of sport, where equine champions have been crowned for centuries and highlights include The Cambridgeshire Meeting featuring The totesport.com Cambridgeshire Handicap and the superlative Champions' Day, overall the highest class race day in Britain.

If you are looking to combine an overnight stay or short break whilst visiting the races, you may wish to look further afield than Newmarket, which not surprisingly gets extremely busy during the races. This also gives you an opportunity to visit other attractions in the area.

Based just a 45minute drive away you will find the Swan Hotel in Lavenham, a 15th century privately owned and quintessentially English country hotel boasting an AA four star rating and two AA Rosettes. Ancient oak beams and inglenook fireplaces blend beautifully with rich furnishings and fabrics to create the perfect ambiance for rest and relaxation after a hard day at the races.
