Avalanche Transceiver: The Beacon That Saves Lives

When an avalanche occurs whatever's in its path will be swept away including rocks

, boulders, trees, buildings and people. Every second counts when it comes to saving a life. Before the invention of avalanche transceivers there was no flashing beacon to find a person buried under 10' of snow and debris. People would bring in dogs and still do to track and find people.

Avalanche transceiver or beacon is a life saving device for people snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the remote back country. The avalanche transceiver has a beacon that when activated is detected or will detect another one. If one of the members of the party is lost in an avalanche as long as the beacon is on they will be found. Just hopefully in time. A person has 15-20 minutes of air to breath which soon mixes with the CO2 and then die of asphyxiation.

Ski patrols train in the use so that during an avalanche the odds of finding a missing person are better, that is, if all the members are wearing them. Many ski resorts require that Avalanche Transceivers be a part of a person's gear for those who want to head into the back country for solitude and blazing trails.

Transceivers are worn around the waist or over the shoulder and under your outer clothing layer. There are 2 settings, one is "transmit" or "send" and the other "receive." When wearing it, it should be in the "transmit" mode.

The avalanche transceiver comes in 2 types, analog and digital. They work nearly the same giving a visual of the transmitting beacon and an audio beep that gets louder the nearer they get to the transmitting beacon. How they process or interpret that signal for the user to read differs among types and models.

If you are new to the use of avalanche transceivers, of the two, digital is the easiest to learn on. It has a shorter range but once it finds the beacon they are faster at finding the victim.

Analog has a longer Range of distance and are a bit tricky to get used to. If you take time to learn and practice with it then the purchase of an analog transceiver is also a good choice.

Avalanche Safety Gear

A few other essentials are:

1. A Snow Study Test Kit for determining the volume and density of the snow. This is the first thing you should use before you risk an avy.

2. The Snow Probe is to find the body under the snow after the beacon has been detected.

3. Next is a Snow Shovel that comes in 2 parts and rides in your pack so you can grab it easily, put the handle on to move snow quickly.

To sum it up when you decide to go off the beaten trail, be safe by using the best equipment available, know the area and snow conditions.

There will be no worries if you and your snow party of friends practices using the Avalanche Transceiver: The Beacon That Saves Lives.
