Average Age Of People Who Get Lap Band Surgery
Today, the obesity rates in the country are increasing at astounding levels and affecting men and women of all ages and all walks of life
. Millions of people are suffering from obesity and the health problems associated with this health condition. Due to its proven results of dropping the excess weight and keeping it off, Lap Band Surgery has become a popular choice for extremely overweight individuals.
Because obesity has become a health issue across all ages of the population, the issue of age that one can have lap band surgery has become a question by many people considering the procedure. Generally, if you are 18 years old or older and you have a Body Mass Index of 40 or more or you have a BMI of 35 or more with at least one severe obesity-related health issue such as Type II diabetes, you are considered a potential candidate for lap band surgery. Those over the age of 65 will be considered on an individual basis. However, other age groups have had success with lap band surgery. For instance, a study conducted by the New York University School of Medicine that included fifty three teenagers (41 girls and 12 boys) between the ages of 13 and 17, showed positive weight loss results after they underwent lap band surgery. The results revealed that teenagers who weighed an average of just under 300 pounds and had an average BMI of 47 lost about 50% of the extra weight 18 months after undergoing lab band surgery. None of the teenagers had complications during the surgery and only 5% developed minor complications which were treated as an outpatient.
There have been impressive results with older individuals who have had lap surgery. Research has shown that the procedure has been safe for older people and the results have been positive.
There have been a number of studies showing that patients over 50 have had safe and successful lab band procedures. Any complications were consistent with any other age group such as band erosion, pouch dilation, band slippage. The research indicates that lab band surgery is a safe and minimally invasive procedure for older people. As well, the weight loss achieved was consistent with younger patients.
People who have had weight loss procedures have achieved a healthy loss of excess weight. The result has been relief or elimination of such conditions as diabetes, breathing problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and less stress on the heart. Patients have seen an improvement in their quality of life as they have more energy, their emotional and mental health improves, and there are fewer illnesses requiring visits to the doctor or hospital.
Because more people of all ages are becoming obese, the demand for a healthy way to lose weight has increased. Lap-Band surgery has been a success in over 350,000 procedures throughout the world. As with any surgery, it is important to talk to your physician about the benefits and risks of having lap band surgery.
