Avoid Common Relationship Problems
We all possess emotional baggage and negative character traits that we unwittingly bring into our relationships
. Many dysfunctional relationships follow predictable patterns that cause pain and strife for everyone involved. It is important to realize that none of us are perfect and that both partners are equally at fault for many of the arguments and disagreements that inevitably crop up in a long-term relationship. The best option for overall sanity and happiness in a relationship is to recognize these emotional and psychological pitfalls and learn to overcome them.
One of the most common problems couples face is jealousy. While this predominantly affects new relationships, jealousy can even strike any stable, long-term relationship at a moment's notice. It is usually trivial things that cause feelings of jealousy and suspicion; a boyfriend may suspect his girlfriend of cheating on him or a married woman might resent her husband's wandering eye. In both cases it is important to realize that the problem lies with the person experiencing jealous feelings and not the other way round.
A regular complaint of many long term couples is that they don't listen to each other anymore. Known as 'selective hearing', this happens when one partner does not pay attention to the other when he or she is talking. They pretend to listen but in reality their minds are a million miles away, preoccupied with other things. While selective hearing may seem minor compared to the other relationship-ending habits in this article, it can lead to long term hostility in couples.
Over-dependence of one partner on the other is not a sign of a healthy relationship. Depending too much on your partner leads to low self esteem and loss of all respect your partner has for you. Not only will over-dependence make you lazy and take your partner for granted, you will find it that much more difficult to move on with your life should the two of you break up. Love and cherish your partner, but try to remain strong and independent person on your own.
Disagreements and arguments are an inevitable part of any normal relationship. It can be healthy to air out grievances from time to time, but you have to make sure that these do not turn into full blown fights. Screaming at the top of your lungs or hurling dinner plates at each other are not conducive to a stable relationship. Try to channel your disagreements into constructive discussions instead of destructive fights.
Incessant nagging is a character trait often associated with domineering mothers and unhappy wives, but in truth both genders are equally guilty of it. Offer guidance and encouragement to your mate, not endless complaints and criticism. Nagging may make you feel better, but it does nothing positive for your partner and only creates long-term resentment.
Try not to engage in the blame game in your relationship. Blaming each other all the time hints at a fundamental disconnect between both partners. Often times the person doing all the blaming is afraid to take responsibility for his or her own actions, choosing instead to unload it on their partner. This is in no way healthy and will in time signal the end of your relationship.
There is no secret to a long and successful relationship. It is something both parties have to work at and strive for whether they have been together a few months or been married for decades. Try not to fall into the common emotional traps many other couples succumb to and always love and cherish your partner.
