Avoid Crimes of Convenience with a Home Security System
Gone are the days of petty theft where a homeowner's biggest concern was getting their lawn-gnomes stolen by local teens on a Saturday night
. Nowadays home security is a growing issue for many. It used to be that people associated crime and break-ins with city living, and in the era of Leave it to Beaver and Happy Days, perhaps this was the case. During those times, suburban and rural areas were considered a safe haven, free from insecurity especially in safety of one's own home. But with the economy still floundering and the value of our modern day commodities high, crime rates are rising in the least likely places.
Where are crimes happening these days? Surprisingly, they are occurring more and more in the former safe-zone of the suburbs. This is due to several factors, the first of which is the economy. The US and global economic recession is hitting hard where the effects aren't normally felt: the American middle class. Many young and qualified workers have found themselves unemployed with no real hope of finding gainful employment any time in the near future. As a result, many are resorting to crime, the most popular and accessible form of which is home theft. The majority of these crimes are committed locally, meaning that people are robbing from their neighbors in their own cities and towns. These are crimes of convenience amplified by a hostile economic climate that has made criminals out of people who would otherwise be employed and earning enough to sustain themselves in their families.
Another reason for the increase in break-ins is also associated with access and profitability. Even with our economic state, suburban homes are still filled with the latest technological must-haves like computers, iphones, blackberries, HD televisions and DVD players, sounds systems, and so on. The middle class has retained what it can of technological luxuries acquired during the pre-recession days. These commodities, however, have become prime targets for thieves as they are available in almost any middle class home, and retain a high resale value due to their high demand.
So what can you do to protect your home and you belongings in this hostile economic climate? One way to gain some peace of mind is to invest in a home security system. Installing a home alarm can offer an affordable and reliable way to keep your home from being broken into. The way that many of these systems work is to monitor movements within the home and sound if any windows or doors are breached. Some are activated with a code, while others can be voice activated or preprogrammed to be automatic. Whatever type of home security system you choose, you home will be invariably safer.
Other ways to reinforce your sense of security at home and in your neighborhood is to talk to your neighbors and start a neighborhood watch. As most of these newer crimes being committed are ones of convenience and opportunity, your home is much less likely to be broken into if you have your friends and neighbors on the lookout.
