Avoid Major Plumbing Problems During The Winter

If you live in a part of the country that gets well below freezing during the winter months

, it is very important to make sure that you are taking action to make sure that you do not end up with all ends of plumbing problems. Pipes can easily freeze when they are not properly protected. Even with insulated pipes, there is still a chance for problems if it gets super cold. There are however things you can do in order to help make sure that your pipes do not freeze.

Many people tend to think that since their pipes are inside of their house, that there is enough protection from the winter cold. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have a fully heated basement. In fact, most people hardly have any heat at all blowing into their basement. This may or may not be something that you will want to address but that is something for the future because of the potential cost involved. You can take steps to help make sure that the plumbing does not freeze.

Some might say that frozen pipes are not a problem because they will eventually un-freeze. Well, when you need to get a shower for work or get the kids ready for school, it will become a problem. Also, many frozen pipes burst, sending water everywhere. This obviously leads to many more problems than just not having the water that you want for the day.

The first thing you will want to do is to wrap all of your exposed pipes with insulated foam meant for pipes. These foam pieces simply slide right on and you do not need any experience for this. For those who have basements that get extremely cold or who have a mobile home with exposed pipes between the ground and the floor, heat tape for the pipes is best. This will ensure that the pipes stay above freezing temperatures. By simply taking a few steps, you will save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration.

Another precaution you can take to help make sure that the pipes do not completely freeze is to leave the kitchen sink water dripping a little with hot water. You do not need the water gushing out - just a small drip will help make sure that there is always a small supply of water running through the pipes. Will that cost you a little bit of money on your water bill? It might, but it will certainly be a lot less expensive than having the pipes bust.

Before winter gets here, you will want to make sure that you are getting things in order so that all of the plumbing is protected.
