Avoid Making Poor Choices Based On Unfounded Fear

If you find yourself losing motivation and energy for your business you may have lost track of your why

. Most coaches want to help and serve others when they begin their coaching businesses. Soon the reality of earning a living in difficult economic times enters the picture. Perhaps clients are not as easy to get as we believed they would be or we get caught up in the details of running our business on a daily basis. Billing, booking appointments, getting new clients and keeping up with paperwork can quickly move our focus from the reason we began coaching in the first place.

Your Why Before Your How

Let me start with the story of how I lost my WHY. I lost my why and made the decision to take a full-time "real job". The good news is this led me back to my true why and a better understanding of myself and what motivates and empowers me.

How Did I Lose My Why?

The answer is simple fear. I have recently had some huge life changes and I got scared. I got scared that I would be lonely, I got scared that I would not make money, I got scared about financial issues like health insurance, I got scared that my work was not going to be fulfilling any longer, I got scared of failure and I got scared that others did not approve.

I did not take the time to examine my fears instead I reacted to them. Had I taken the time to realistically examine each fear I would have found that most of them were not true and those that had some truth also had some simple solutions. Had I taken the time to look at my fear I would not have made the choice to take a full-time job all the way across town. I have nobody to blame but myself for this choice or reaction to my fear.

Fear is Sneaky

Even those of us who advise others and can easily see when fear has begun to rule our client's choices can fall prey to that same emotion. Fear is sneaky it starts out small with one small seed that soon begins to grow and sprout branches of even more fears. Before you know it you have a great multi-branched tree with roots and branches of fear.

What we often do next is fertilize that tree with negative thinking and soon we begin to climb the fear tree and build a tree house in it.

Fear is Something to Examine

Almost everything I have ever feared would happen has never happened. Most of my fears have never materialized, yet I have spent countless hours thinking about how I would avoid those fears or situations. What I have learned from my most recent experience in that when I feel fear it is a signal to stop and begin writing about my fears and determine if they are in fact real fears that I should take action on or if they are simply problems that exist only in my my and have a very low likelyhood of ever actually occuring.

Fear can cause bad decision and inappropriate actions. So it is important to use the feeling of fear as nothing more than a signal that it is time for more evaluation.
