Avoid PIP Silicone Implants
PIP is a French company that makes saline and silicone breast implants
. Unfortunately, it appears as if the type of silicone filler material they used is suboptimal and unauthorized, and as a result, the implants are being recalled. This company states that they export to 66 countries, but luckily the US is not one of them. This implant recall is estimated to affect over 35,000 women from all over the world.
In the US, there are only two companies allowed to sell breast implants for cosmetic use, these companies are Allergan and Mentor. Allergan is an independent company and Mentor is a part of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation. Both companies obtained re-approval for silicone gel breast implants in November of 2006 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Both companies have an excellent track record and also provide warranties for their respective products. Essentially, if one of their implants is defective the company will pay for a portion of your revision surgery, as well as, give you a free implant.
PIP implants were used mainly in Europe, since the company is based in France. It is unclear what exactly is covered, since it varies by country and insurance company. In general, it seems that removal of the PIP breast implants and associated operative costs are included, but not replacement with different implants. The French equivalent of the FDA has released several position papers on PIP implants.
If you have had PIP silicone implants in the past, you may want to discuss what to do with your operative surgeon.
