Avoiding And Repairing An Xbox 360 Freeze Up

If you have your own Xbox 360 system and play it a lot

, you've undoubtedly experienced an Xbox 360 freeze up. Many new users don't think that much about it. They simply reboot the machine and start playing again. This works for a while, but they don't realize that when an Xbox 360 keeps freezing up, it's an indication of a serious problem that will get progressively worse until your Xbox 360 simply refuses to work. The problem shouldn't seriously damage your hardware, but if it prevents you from using your Xbox 360 it's troublesome. The culprit and the primary cause of freeze ups, is overheating.

When an Xbox 360 freezes up for the first time, most gamers assume that it's a problem with the CD, but it's really an indication that something damaging is going on inside your Xbox 360. If you shut the Xbox down as soon as the freeze up happens, you will probably resolve that particular event with no long term damage, and have your system up and running again in about one-half hour. If you leave it in the freeze state for too long, however, some hardware damage may result.

If, after you have shut down your Xbox 360 for a least one-half hour, it does not restart, there are two options available to you: send it to a Microsoft repair center for repairs, or buy an Xbox 360 freeze up repair guide. If you elect to send the Xbox off to a Microsoft repair center, be prepared to spend upwards of $140 and wait for about six to eight weeks for the repairs to be made. If you go for the repair guide option, you'll probably spend more like $30 and fix it in several hours. Make sure that you buy one of the newer guides that come with video tutorials giving you step-by-step instructions to walk you through the repair process. You won't need any special skills, just some time, some hand tools, and the ability to follow video instructions.

It's probably inevitable, over the life time of your system that your Xbox 360 freezes up at least once, most likely more than once. If you take some simple precautions, however, you can prevent or minimize the number of times that your system freezes up. Most importantly, keep your console clean. Wipe it down regularly to get rid of dust. Don't operate it in a dusty area or in areas where people are smoking. Play it in a room with a reasonably cool temperature.

If you take all of the prudent preventive measures, you may not have many freeze up horror stories to tell your friends. It would be smart, however, to get a good repair guide with video tutorials, just in case an Xbox 360- freeze up happens.
