Avoiding Cybercrime

Cybercrime refers to criminal acts involving or using computers and networks

, may it be hacking, or Internet scams. Internet fraud, identity theft, and credit card thefts are considered also as cybercrimes. One way for cybercriminals to succeed in penetrating your computer or network is by looking for security vulnerabilities that they can use for entry. A major step towards protecting your computer or network from malware that empowers cybercrime is to install an antivirus firewall software suite on your computers.

Many people have already been victimized by cybercriminals, but you can do something to avoid them and it is done simply by being proactive in your defense strategies. Here are some of the ways:

Encrypt information. Encrypt data that are important so that the wrong recipient can't read and use it. Use software that garbles or encripts your data so that a hacker or a cracker will not be able to understand it even if the hacker can take possession of it.

Be cautious in giving away your personal and private information via websites you are not familiar with, especially sites who eagerly and slyly ask for your real name, residential or postal address, financial account numbers, etc. Follow certain guidelines every time you do online banking transaction just to be safe.

Fire up your spam blocker. Have you received any emails that are quite suspicious, with subjects indicating that you won a lottery or tips on how to earn big bucks? Be careful because they may be spam. Almost all Internet service providers offer a network-based spam blocking service that weeds out potential spam messages (e.g., fraudulent and phishing emails) even before they arrive at your inbox.

Go e-shopping on trusted and secure websites only. You will know if the website is secure if it has a URL starting with "https" instead of the usual "http". Websites that bear a VeriSign or TRUSTe seal also tend to be secure. If the website does not have these, then you are potentially uploading your credit card and other private details to a possibly fraudulent site.

Avoid tempting your self to join such scams as online lotteries and phony sweepstakes.

Monitor your children's online activities. They may not know it, but some websites may contain threats to your computer. You can install parental control applications or software to restrict the type of sites that your child can view.

Never let anybody use your computer. It is better to use a password on your computer so that no one can easily open it. Always be vigilant with cybercrimes because you will never know what new schemes will float on the Web.

Be updated. Make sure that your antivirus firewall software is updated to eliminate recent malware and spyware. You also need to scan your computer at least once every week to detect and remove a host of viruses, spyware, malware, and other threats.

Enable firewall protection. Enable your computer's firewall in order to put up a digital wall to prevent intruders from infiltrating your computer and invading your privacy. Never run your computer with your firewall turned off.

Or, if you prefer an all-in-one solution, you can simply go for an antivirus firewall software suite, which includes the capabilities of both antivirus and firewall protection, and more.
