Avon, the company for women, was started in 1886 by David H
. McConnell at the age of 28. It wasn't always named Avon, but started with the name 'California Perfume Company'. It grew from a 300 square foot office to an enormous 323,000 square foot facility by 1971. Even an earthquake that destroyed the building in 1906 didn't prevent the company from reopening immediately and continuing to grow. By 1928 the California Perfume Company had 25,000 representatives and started selling its first products with the brand name 'Avon' on them - a tooth brush, talcum and vanity set. After David H. McConnell's death, the company is handed down to his son and the company is renamed Avon Products, Inc. In 1970 U.S. sales were breaking the $750 million mark and the Avon line has 800 products in it. By 1979 Avon sales reached $3 billion.
Avon carries several product lines for its reps to sell. Its most recognized is of course the Avon make-up line, 'Avon Color'. The make-up line has mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, lipstick and more. But Avon also carries skin care, bath and body products, hair care, fragrances and even wellness products. Avon continues to be a huge name in the cosmetic and network marketing industry today with an ever expanding sales team and product line.
The business opportunity within Avon is similar to that of any MLM today. To create success within the MLM industry you will need to recruit friends and family, attend and promote hotel meetings, attend and promote product parties, attend and promote home presentations and attend company sponsored seminars. After analyzing the compensation structure the conclusion is that the average person will not achieve any substantial success within Avon. While the products are good and very well known, you are competing with over 2.6 million distributors (and that number is from 1997!). The fact is everyone knows someone that sells Avon and to get customers you need to take customers from another distributor. There is no real room for creating a new customer base. That means there is not a very good chance for you, or the people you recruit, to create a growing business with new customers. This in turn means people in your down line quit frequently, making it necessary to continue recruiting new people. The business model is out dated and not set up for the average person. The amount of people needed in your organization to create a solid six figure income would enter the thousands.
