Awaroa Walkway - A Trail Through Enchanting Auckland

The spirit of Auckland is centred round the sea and the sea in return provides the

area with a unique serenity that can hardly be seen anywhere else in the world. And one of the best ways to explore Auckland and its natural setting is to walk the Awaroa Walkway. Awaroa in Maori means 'long river' and in this case it refers to the Tamaki Strait, a stretch of sea resembling a long river which spreads from the south of Maraetai and Musick Point.

The Walkway generally takes the coast line, unless of course the tide is too high in which case the walkway is through reserves and other pathways. There are various access points to the Awaroa Walkway and the general route of the walkway connects all access points. A complete round trip takes an estimated four to five hours but it is easier to take a shorter section of the Walkway.

The main access points are Musik Point, Eastern Beach, Mellons Bay, Howick Beach, Cockle Bay and Sandspit. The route from Sandspit to cockle Bay takes explorers on a zigzagging path through the Cruise Bay and the widespread farmlands and the stretch leading to Howick Beach from Cockle Bay takes a route through the Maori village of Tuwakamana Paa and the beach and offers views of the lovely coastline.

From Howick Beach to Mellons Bay explorers are afforded a scenic route which includes the Howick Reef, coastal views and a walk along the beach. And the rest of the way up to Eastern Beach promises rare sightings of a wild pigeon colony. The Walkway stretching from Eastern Beach to Musick Point is a route through the famous Eastern Beach, a beach for cockles, water skiing and swimming, and through the Musick Point's rock platforms - a place to explore strata formations, kingfisher nests and rock pools.
