Awnings For Home Protect From The Sun

Awnings for home can protect your home from the solar heating of the summer sun

. They are particularly effective with large windows and patio doors. The do not block the view of the occupants of the home but shade the windows so that there is less solar heating of the home during the summer.

Windows in the home allow for natural light and ventilation. Most of the time, they are a welcome addition, giving a view to the outside. On the warmest of summer days, the solar heating that comes through the glass can raise the temperature of the room by several degrees.

Window curtains and blinds are somewhat useful in keeping heat from the sun outside. Interior window coverings are limited in their usefulness, however. By the time they stop the sun's heat it has already infiltrated the home and is behind the curtain. Some of this heat will leak into your home around the curtains.

When winter comes, solar heating may be a good thing. It can lower your energy consumption and provide free heat. Fortunately, the winter sun shines from a lower angle and can still enter the home under the awnings. Retractable awnings can allow even more of the winter sun's heat to enter your home. Storing the awnings retracted in the winter protects them from heavy snow loads that could cause damage.

Awnings are available in many different colors to match the exterior of your home. In addition, they can be made of many different materials. Your choice between permanent and retractable awning may make a difference in the materials that are available.

An awning may also be used to cover the patio area. It will provide the protection from the sun when needed. Once again, if you choose a retractable awning, on the days that you want to enjoy the full sun it can be rolled away so that you once again have an uncovered patio. If it starts to rain on your picnic, just roll out the awning and you have an area that remains dry in the rainstorm.

In the past, most retractable awnings for home relied on a hand crank mechanism that required the owner to go out into the heat and turn the crank to open or close the awning. Today, the hand crank has been replaced by an electric motor. Using the remote control, you can open or close an awning without ever leaving the comfort of the home.
