What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of traditional medicine. It is an established alternative form of medicinal treatment recognized worldwide. Besides providing natural remedies for different ailments, Ayurveda also prescribes the ways in which an individual can lead a healthy life through a disciplined daily routine. This may be a little difficult to follow in the current age, where people spend more than ten hours at their computer desks and rarely get time to exercise. As far as skin ailments go, it is believed that they are caused due to internal/inherent factors such as reduced elastin production, skin's inability to retain moisture or external factors such as poor diet, exposure to harsh environments, stress, lack of physical activity and excessive smoking or drinking. Instead of drowning down capsules or applying creams/lotions high in chemical content, Ayurveda proposes dealing with the root of the problem and application of natural ingredients on the affected parts of the skin.
Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day, cutting down intake of hot, spicy food, coffee, tea, reducing exposure to harsh sunlight, chemicals, pollution and lowering stress levels through exercise, meditation provide relief from skin conditions such as acne, dry skin, dull skin and dermatitis.
Simple home remedies for skin ailments
Honey is the perfect natural ingredient for most skin problems. Dry skin sufferers should apply a mixture of honey (half a tablespoon) and rose water (1-2 tablespoons) to the dry areas of the skin and wash off with lukewarm water after 20 minutes. Honey acts as a moisturizer and prevents the skin from drying up fast.
Mix 2-3 drops of rose water with plain water. Splash the mixture on your face and wash your eyes gently with it as well. It keeps your skin clean, sweet-smelling and also removes dust and other foreign particles from your eyes.
Acne sufferers can get relief by applying aloe vera pulp to the affected parts two times a day. Scars and pimples can become lighter or disappear by applying a mixture of rose water and lemon juice (in equal quantities) on the affected parts and washing it off with cold water after 45 minutes or so.
Massaging the face with coconut oil or almond oil every night before going to bed offers an effective cure for dry skin. You can also apply a paste of egg yolk, honey and milk powder (all in small quantities) on the dry parts of the skin and wash it off with cold water after 15-20 minutes. Complement these treatments by drinking at least ten glasses of water a day to flush out the toxins from your body and keep your skin healthy.
