I'm not sure why I wasn't asked to be part of this jury, but I have to admit I am mostly in agreement with the findings of the 66 automotive writers from around the world who chose the top ten finalists in two categories for 2011 World Car of the Year.

Done by secret ballot, of course, the voting included a balanced number of media members from Asia, Europe and North and South America as well as some other parts of the world. All those selected were renowned writers in their own countries or regions.

San Francisco BMW service staff members are thrilled to see the two BMW models in the running for 2011 World Car of the Year: BMW 5 Series and BMW X3. Quite an honor in this steeply competitive race. The ten finalists are not ranked, but listed alphabetically and other brand models include the Audi 1 and A8, Jaguar XJ, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz SLS, Nissan LEAF, Porsche Cayenne and Volvo S60/V60.

The 2011 World Performance Car category also had 10 finalists, including brands like Aston Martin, Audi, Cadillac, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz AMG, Porsche and Renault. Jurors will look at these top ten lists and cast a final vote this month for the winners.

Vehicles are judged on value, safety, overall merit, environmental responsibility, significance and emotional appeal. The top three contenders in each category will be announced in March at the Geneva International Motor Show.

BMW Woodside customers can be proud that the BMW 3-Series took the title in 2006 and that BMW is a serious contender this year. Last year's World Car of the Year was the Volkswagen Polo. The awards began in 2003 and are given by a non-profit organization to recognize and reward excellence in the auto industry. This is also a way to gauge the scope of the global auto market.

San Francisco BMW service customers should know that this is one of the most coveted awards on the planet and with Prime Research International continuing to associate with the World Car Awards as a research partner, reports analyzing the awards global automotive media coverage will be provided by the company in 2011.
