The sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are increasingly becoming very popular among buyers. It had been smacked by Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh for being inefficient in fuel and destructive to the environment but this does not seem to stop people from buying the units. Toyora Kirloskar's Fortuner and BMW X1 were able to receive unprecedented positive response from the market despite the hefty price tag that both bear according to official statements from the company. Both the models operate under the entry premium tag in the SUV segment. Even if Toyota has been repeatedly forced to shut the bookings for the SUV, the demand for the BMW X1 is getting better and better. The clients are asking about buying the vehicle even if the German company is still going to formally open the bookings for the model. The deliveries of the SUV will commence in January and this is going to be the cheapest model from BMW that is going to be sold in India. Sources have said that BMW will price the unit at Rs 22-23 lakh which is below the entry-level sedan 320i (3-Series) priced at Rs 26.95 lakh. It is expected that the rising demand for the X1 will give BMW an overall sales lift since the company started in India. This is enough for the company to maintain its lead over the rival Mercedez-Benz which is now India's biggest luxury car maker. A spokesperson from BMW said that "Although bookings for the X1 haven't opened yet, consumers are making payments for it in advance. There is a huge interest for the vehicle which is a result of a teaser campaign we had started six months back." Meanwhile, Toyota is going to open again the nationwide bookings for the Fortuner on January 1 and apparently, the company is running an order backlog of 5, 000 units for the model. The consumers must also know that they will have to wait for around 6 months before they are able to take possession of the vehicle. Sandeep Singh, the Deputy Managing director for Sales and Marketing of Toyota Kirloskar Motors that the company is "not planning to hike the Fortuner's production, as there is no room for expansion (at the Bangalore factory). We are focusing on the Innova, whose production is much higher,"
