BMW i to launch i3 and i8 by 2013

For the manufacturing plant of the sub-brand cars, a facility was recently established in Leipzig, at an investment of $547 million. A BMW spokesperson said, "The Company was establishing a New York-based venture capital company called iVentures to invest in providers of location-based and other premium mobility services. The fund will be capitalized at up to $100 million." The reason for launch of the sub-brand was the transforming needs of the customers and shrinking spaces in the city, which is making it difficult for big vehicles to overcome traffic jam woes. Also, the increasing prices of gasoline and good response to electric cars, has made the company plan its own line of electric, hybrid vehicles that would do justice to the needs of present times.

Apart from manufacturing the two cars, the sub-brand of the auto major would also work at providing parking solutions, navigation system containing all local data and route planning. "We intend to make a profit from these premium services, which could draw new customers. Some people are interested in having more flexibility when it comes to driving cars. The logic is simple: I'll pay for it when I want to use it," stated BMW's marketing head Ian Robertson. The new cars by the German car maker would be powered by lithium-ion batteries and the carbon-dioxide emissions caused in petrol and diesel variants will not be there in the newly-planned cars.

About the cars

The electric car named i3 and the hybrid one named i8 would be light weight cars made form aluminum chassis and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. Robertson said, "The electric car would be sold at a premium price higher than the 30,000 to 40,000 which early plug-in cars such as Nissan's leaf and General Motors' Chevrolet Volt sell, before government tax incentives. It will be more than that."
