BV Keeps Recurring Even After Treatments - What Keeps Causing My Bacterial Vaginal Infection?
Bacterial vaginosis is a common infection that can affect women at least once in their lives
. Even without treatment some
cases of bacterial vaginosis clear up within three to four days; however if the unpleasant vaginal discharge continues longer than that, a visit to the doctor is needed.
Usual treatment consists of metronidazole tablets and is found to be effective for most women, although 30% report a recurrence after 3 months of treatment. Experts don't really know the exact reason why BV keeps on recurring even after treatments, but suggest that it may either be because the old infection is active once again or that a new infection has taken place.
In order to understand this, you have to know that the vagina has its own set of natural microflora and environmental conditions that let this microflora thrive. Once the natural balance of these conditions pH moisture is changed, then so does the number of the bacteria present.
In an unbalanced environment, the number of "bad" bacteria can grow to replace the "good" bacteria. Treatments for BV may eliminate most of the "bad" bacteria, but there is a possibility that some of it may remain and once the conditions are right they can repopulate again, leading to the recurrence of BV.
Another plausible explanation as to why
BV keeps recurring even after treatments is that after the "bad" bacteria have been eliminated, the "good" bacteria originally thriving in the vagina have trouble growing back to their original numbers. In these cases, consult your doctor and see if a change in medication can solve the recurrence of your BV.
