Baaps Reports Uk Plastic Surgery Professionals Performed More Moob Surgery In 2009
Men rarely complain openly about their body parts
, but many of them are horrified at the suggestion that they may have gynaecomastia, more commonly known as moobs. More of them did something about it in 2009, despite the persistent financial struggles caused by the on-going recession.
According to the numbers released by BAAPS, or the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, 581 male breast reductions were performed at UK plastic surgery clinics last year. This was an increase of approximately 80%, which made this the third most popular procedure for British men.
Moobs, also called male breasts or man-boobs, are caused by medications, diets, medical problems, obesity, genetics, or even age. And while it may be a natural occurrence, men find them very difficult to get rid of, and even with cosmetic surgery, they only have two main options.
Liposuction is one common treatment option. During this procedure, cosmetic surgeons use special tools to suck conglomerations of fat cells out from under the skin's surface. Because this only requires a small incision, there is very little scarring left behind.
The alternative procedure is the removal of excess skin and fat through an incision around the nipple or base of the breast. Both procedures are done as an outpatient and involve a certain amount of recovery. During this time, the patient uses pain medication to control the pain, swelling, and bruising. They must also wear a special compression garment. However, patients are generally pleased with the results.
UK Plastic Surgery Clinics Report a General Increase in the Number of Procedures Performed
British cosmetic surgery clinics saw an increase in more than just gynaecomastia treatment, according to BAAPS. For men, the five most popular procedures included rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction, otoplasty (ear correction) and liposuction. For women, the top five list included breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, face / neck lift, and tummy tucks. Overall, clinics performed 6.7% more procedures for a total of 36,482 procedures in 2009.
BAAPS indicates that not all procedures increased during the year. Female facelift procedures decreased an 8% decrease in 2009, which is believed to be caused mostly by the recession. The experts feel patients are saving money by only having the areas repaired that bother them the most, which would explain the 43% increase in brow lifts, a 25% increase in nose jobs, and a 6% increase in eyelid surgery.
