A site of great importance in Amritsar, Baba Atal Rai Tower achieves this status through the popular belief that Guru Hargobind took his last breath before dying inside the structure. It houses the remains of Guru Harobind and his youngest son Atal Rai after whom the tower was named. The story behind the creation of the tower states that Baba brought a friend of his back to life after an untimely death. Babas father deemed this an act against the Sikh tradition and that established laws had been broken. Baba then offered to take his own life for breaking the law. Since Baba died at the age of nine, each of the floors of the towers denotes a year in his life. The prestigious title of Baba (grand old man) was bestowed upon Atal Rai despite his young age for the extraordinary powers that he demonstrated. The first floor of the tower preserves a range of artefacts that tell the tale of Guru Hargovind and Atal Rai which are mainly told through the murals that adorn the walls.
