Babies Blemished By Baby Acne by:Dr. Rose Windale
When we think of a newborn baby, what comes into mind is a fragile
, adorable and cuddly creature. Something untainted and immaculate. When we think of a newborn baby we can actually imagine that sweet scent and that soft, silky skin that is almost perfect. But that is not always the case as there are times when a baby has tiny red bumps on the cheek, the forehead and the skin. Those are basically pimples, otherwise termed as neonatorum or baby acne. Seeing those on your newborn can virtually shatter your idealism about babies. Yes, babies can have acne. Twenty percent of newborn babies are affected by the skin condition called baby acne.
Oftentimes, they appear right after birth or in some cases baby acne would occur a few weeks afterwards. Once those tiny pimples disappear within a few weeks, then they are categorized as millia and is in no way related to baby acne. Baby acne can be attributed to a lot of factors. First, it can be due to a skin irritation as in the case of adolescents. Medications applied or ingested by the mother during pregnancy can likewise cause the condition as well as drugs taken by the baby. In some instances, it is possible that baby acne can be triggered by mineral oil or petroleum as well as the mother's hormones.
But as the baby grows older, it will eventually lose the substance and the baby acne will eventually diminish. Baby acne is unlikely to be alarming but once the condition persists for three months or more, then it may be appropriate to seek medical attention. Once those baby pimples beset your newborn, there are various options for treatment although in most cases baby acne will fade away in a few week's time. Oils and lotions may be helpful for acne in adolescents, but not so with your baby. It may be much better to clean your baby's face once a day with clean water and mild baby soap.
It may not be a good idea to scrub baby acne off your baby's face as this may be too abrasive and could scuff or irritate your baby's skin. It may be prudent to use an all natural product with vinegar solution to apply on your baby's face to relieve baby acne. Creams or oils and other harsh applications should not be resorted to as the baby's skin is obviously delicate and such products could do more harm than good. Acne regimen for adolescents are definitely not suitable to babies as the baby's skin is vulnerable to irritation and much more so, injury.
It is best to use products which are naturally based, unadulterated and considerably mild. Aside from that, the best remedy is by far fresh, clean water. That is a guaranteed safe and an unquestionable means of cleansing your baby's face of baby acne. There is certainly no harm in employing this measure but there is no need for you to do this frequently. Gently wiping your baby's face with a piece of wet cotton once a day is by far the most insipid means of clearing those baby acne. There is basically no cause to be concerned or distressed with baby acne as it is just a minor irregularity.
In a few week's time, those baby pimples generally disappear on their own. However there are cases wherein baby acne would need medical attention. If baby acne persist for a period of three months or more, then it may be time to see your doctor.
