Baby Blue Eyes Spruce The Ideal Ornamental Tree

Baby Blue Eyes Spruce is an attractive and strikingly beautiful plant with a rare shade of green

. Its spiky sharp needles are grayish in color and the plant retains its unusual color all year round. Easily adaptable to dry weather too, if kept in shaded surroundings it exhibits a lovely shade of blue. A perfect ornamental plant as its shaded hues add to your landscaping and make it looks lovely. It is basically a native North American species.

Another advantage of this plant is that the needles do not change color during fall season, thereby having a standard shade throughout the year. The tree is dense and has a tough central leader and takes up a pyramidal shape. Extremely low maintenance, you just need to regularly prune the tree to promote new growth and cut back the dead branches. Thankfully it does not attract deer to feed on it as it is not so delicious for them.

A normal healthy plant can grow up to 20 feet of height when mature and about 10 feet wide. It has a low canopy you can easily plant Baby Blue Eyes Spruce under power lines. The growth rate of the plant is quite slow and grows only about two to three inches a year. Its life span under healthy conditions is generally 80 years.

The tree flourishes under abundant sunlight and can easily adapt to both wet and dry weather conditions. Standing water however is not tolerated by the tree and can do immense harm to it. Being tolerant to drought like conditions it is an ideal tree to be used for landscaping in low moisture conditions or xeriscaping. Luckily it is tolerant to the salts present in the soil so the pH of the soil does not really make much of a difference to the growth of the tree. The hardiness zone from 3-8 are best suited for the tree. It grows well in a well aerated soi.

The environmental pollution of the city too does not harm the tree in any way and it can easily grow in city conditions too. It blooms during the spring but its flowers are not generally used for ornamental purposes. Its low water requirements are a big asset and hence it can be grown at places with low water availability too. Its stunning silver-blue foliage makes it an ideal tree to be grown in closed spaces. The Baby Blue Eyes Spruce has four-sided sharp needles that are arranged in a radially on brownish-orange shoots.

The tree needs protection from white pine weevil pest as it attacks the leader growth of the spruce. Other than white pine weevil the tree also needs protection from aphids as they attack the internal needle growth of the spruce.
