Baby Safety Gates: Choosing Between Hardware Based Or Pressure Based
If you are shopping for baby safety gates whether in the nearest store or online
, you may have noticed that there are two types of baby safety gates available today. These are the Hardware based baby safety gates and the Pressure based baby safety gates. Each of these has its own strengths and weaknesses. Knowing these can help you in your choice.
Hardware based baby safety gates are the permanent type. It is very like the gates you install inside your house like the fireplace gate, the kitchen gate and the pet gate, except that they are rather smaller. Baby safety gates are typically below 36 inches or 3 feet in height. The advantage of a permanent type of baby safety gate is that they are very secure once they are properly installed in sturdy foundations. It is less likely to be knocked down by your young one than the other type.
An adult would can easily come in and go out from a room where the baby safety gate is affixed since Hardware based baby safety gates have latches or safety locks on one side. This is the perfect baby safety gate to be affixed at either the top and or bottom of the stairs. If it is attached at the top of the stairs, you can place the gate in such a manner that it will not swing outward.
One disadvantage of the permanent baby safety gates is the time it takes to remove it, since these are usually tightly screwed to the wall. You may also encounter some issues with the holes left by the removal of the gate. Placing fillers on the holes can resolve this problem, though.
On the other hand, you will not have difficulty removing, installing or moving your baby safety gates around if you were to use the Pressure based gate. As the name itself implies, it makes use of pressure to stay put. When installed, the gate pushes against the wall mountings, creating tension there and allowing it to hold firmly on the spot. It can be installed easily as well. You only need to squeeze it to adjust so you can place it in the door frame or in between the walls.
However, one clear issue with pressure mounted baby safety gates is that they absolutely cannot be placed at the top of the stairs. If it receives greater pressure (in this case, from your child), then it can be knocked over. This baby safety gate is ideal for ground floor areas, bedrooms and the kitchen.
As always, before buying baby safety gates - whether hardware based or pressure based - you have to make sure that the brand possesses high quality standards and security certifications. Also, once you notice that the height of the baby safety gate reaches the three quarters of your child's height, it is about time to replace them. The same should also be done if you see your child undoing the latch or the safety lock. This signals that it is about time to look for a new childproofing gadget.
