Transfer switches connect the generator to the electric panel. Transfer switches decide if the generator or your utility will supply power to the main panel. When power is working fine through your local utility, such as PG&E in the San Francisco Bay Area, the transfer switch routes the PG&E power into your main electrical panel. When the primary power source fails (i.e. PG&E power is no longer available), the transfer switch automatically starts the power generator and routes the emergency power to supply the main electric panel. Automatic power up and transfer is key to a complete system. You don't have to do anything or be around for the emergency system to do its job. Generators can be sized to cover a portion of the electrical requirements, or an entire house.Where do emergency power generators get their power ? Typical sources include diesel fuel, natural gas, and propane gas. The most common application for residential use is propane gas (LP...think BBQ tank). A standalone propane tank can power a good size house for three to five days with the right generator. While using natural gas that is already supplied to your house is convenient, in many areas it may not be available just when you need it. If you live in earthquake country, natural gas supply lines may rupture and/or be automatically shut down...making a stand alone LP tank a smart choice.Selecting the proper equipment is crucial. A licensed general contractor that knows how size system requirements, and properly integrate in your existing electrical panel is crucial. In most areas you will need a building permit to install a standby electric generator.So why invest in a standby generator ? Large earthquakes can cause long term power outages that last for a week or longer. Fires and storms can cause multi day power outages. Having backup power will allow your house and family to operate normally. Consider no electricity for days on end...its not a pleasant thought. Food will perish, safety issues will escalate (candles for days ??), and you will need to find a way for your family to cope. Emergency power generators can not only make life much easier, but provide a safe environment for your family during natural disasters. For many homeowners , an automatic standby generator may be one of smartest investments you can make.
