When you visit any high ranking website, check if they have a link exchange facility. You can submit links to directories. If you have a software which allows you to submit to 40 or 50 free directories a day it is good for your website ranking. The importance of Social networking websites are growing for link building. Search engines are indexing live results from micro blogging sites like Twitter. These websites are creating a huge number of links every day.

Mostly there are two factors effecting Page Ranks. Other sites contain inbound links with less relevancy and competition within the niche. Definitely poetry sites are less competitive than business directory or online marketing sites. Page Rank could be harder to build in highly competitive niches.
