Gujarat's main city is Ahmedabad. A bit older and a bit modern, most of Gujarat's treasures are found here. With a history rich in Muslim influence, Ahmedabad's old city is dotted with monuments and structures with wonderful architectural styles depicting the glorious past. Built in 1411 AD by Sultan Ahmed Shah, the Bhadra Fort, named after the popular Kovil' dedicated to Bhadra Kali' (a Hindu Goddess), is part of the complex, and is a famous landmark in Gujarat. The fort, whose walls at one time enclosed the entire town, extends to cover an area of 43 acres and is home to some of the most impressive structures in the area.


The Bhadra Fort is explored by tourists mostly for its opulence and royal splendour. Architectural attributes such as arches with intricate carvings, skilfully carved balconies and elaborate Jali' work are sights not be missed. The Triple Gateway, locally known as the Teen Darwaja, is a massive gateway situated on the eastern side of Bhadra Fort. The doorway to the Royal Square, the Gateway is one of the fort's biggest attractions. Visitors to the fort can also explore the royal chambers, dungeons and other parts of the old castle.

Today, the fort is also home to modern day government offices and also serves as a public square.
