Bahir Dar Tour Guide

Bahir Dar is the third-largest city in Ethiopia and the capital of the Amhara people

, who form the second-largest community in the country.

You can get to the city either by plane or bus. Within the city itself, there are blue mini buses that provide efficient transport. You may also use three-wheeled taxis or get a special experience aboard horse-drawn carts, both of which are relatively cheap.

There are several places of interest in Bahir Dar. The city was established at the site of a Jewish settlement that was founded between the sixth and seventh centuries. The Pedro Paez building dates back to this period. Haile Selassie built one of his palaces close to the city, where he thought of moving the national capital. The palace affords a good glimpse at the type of architecture used at the time. Apart from enjoying the palace itself, it also provides the opportunity to have some of the best views, considering that it faces Lake Tana.

Lake Tana is where the Blue Nile originates. You can take a boat trip to the site where the river flows out of the lake. One of the special features at the sight is that is the most ideal location for spotting hippos.

The islands in Lake Tana have their own unique attractions. They are among the sites where you will find some of the oldest monasteries and churches in the world. There are boat tours that take between two and twelve hours that you may book from your hotel. There are other places around the city where you can also make your reservation. If you would like to determine the specific islands and churches you would like to explore, you may hire your own boat. There are some monasteries where women are not permitted to enter. You should understand the traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to ensure that you abide by the rules.

Tis Abay, or Blue Nile Falls, is about 35 kilometers away from the city. The falls afford some spectacular views, in spite of the fact that much of the water has been diverted to an electricity dam. Take a bus ride to Tis Abay village, from where you can trek for about half an hour to the falls.

One of the things you should watch out for in the city is being swindled by people who will try to convince you that the 'last bus' to Bahir Dar is going to be so full that you should let them reserve a seat for you-which means that you have to pay them. Alternatively, they may tell you that the last bus has left, so you should take a taxi, which will charge an exorbitant fare. There are many buses back to the city up to five in the evening, and the conductors are quite helpful in securing seats.

Another interesting place is the market, which is large and colorful. There are also several places where you can eat and drink, among which are Al-Hanan Muslim Restaurant and Tana Restaurant.
