Ball bearing

A bearing is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their principle of operation as well as by the directions of applied loads they can handle. There are many different types of bearings among which the ball bearing is rather common.

A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing which uses balls to maintain the separation between the moving parts of the bearing. Ball bearings were first produced in Europe, and then American manufacturers produced ball bearings in metric dimensions prior to the early-1990s. We can see that they have been developed for almost 20 years.

Ball bearings can be made from different materials such as stainless steel, chrome steel and ceramic, etc. Those made from different materials have their own functions and characteristics. But usually, ball bearings are made from the steels though this material has many disadvantages. The steel-made ball bearings are very hard and strong. They can bear a lot of pressure. Besides, ball bearings are relatively cheaper than other kinds because of the low cost of producing the balls used in the bearing.

Ball bearings are used in various applications. They are commonly used in machinery industry and in wheels of vehicles like cars, buses and motorcycles. The life span of ball bearings is calculated on their working speed and the load they bear. Generally, ball bearings can last a long time, but the actual lifespan should be based on the usage, the pressure they get, and the maintenance measures. After the frequent usage of ball bearings, their life span will be reduced. As a result, it is very important to maintain them. If the maintenance is done properly, the life span of ball bearings will be maximized.

How to do the maintenance? There are some points. Fist of all, ball bearings should be lubricated at regular intervals. After a period of operating, ball bearing will definitely be worn, thus, lubricating ball bearings with a lubricant such as oil or grease is of great importance. Besides, you can reduce the friction to ease the burden of ball bearings. In the daily use of ball bearings, you should pay attention to any noise that ball bearings produce because it may be the sign of breaking down. These are the basic maintenance ways. If you want to achieve the maximum life span of ball bearings, do whatever you can to protect them.
