Balloons Outdoors
Summer is coming. That means picnics, barbeques, pool parties and beach time. And of course, you want to decorate all your events with balloons.
Balloons are a great media for attracting attention, adding color and ambiance, and setting the stage. The thing is, balloons outside have different needs and issues than balloons indoors.
First thing to watch out for is heat. Heat can wreak havoc on balloons in many ways. Stay away from dark colors, like black, green, brown, purple, etc., as they absorb heat and can pop. Next inflate the balloon so that it will float, but leave a little bit of room for the balloon to expand, so it the temperature warms up throughout the day, it won't expand and pop.
Next thing you have to worry about is wind. As little as four miles an hour is a lot to a balloon. Essentially, the balloon is like a kite or a sail, it can catch the wind and be pushed by it. This means that for free-standing dcor, like columns or arches, you want a solid base with a good footprint and weight. Weight alone is not enough, you also need a wide footprint.
Here are some recommendations for strategies to change indoor dcor to something that would work better for outdoors:
Arches: Instead of a spiral arch, which is anchored to the ground, it's better to do two columns with wide footprints and have an arch tied into them. The arch can blow down to its anchor point. So, if it's anchored on the ground it can blow all the way down to the ground. If, on the other hand, it's anchored at the 6' mark of a column, it will generally only blow down to that point.
Bouquets: Instead of a bouquet with lots of individual ribbons, which will tangle around each other in the wind, it's better to do dcor that is on a single anchor point, like a Cloud 9 or a Topiary kite. Then for extra movement you can put a wide ribbon hanging down to catch the wind and give some rhythm. The single anchor point will work better with the wind, moving from side to side instead of tangling up in itself.
Balloon Releases: Check your local city ordinances. Here in San Diego there are restrictions on how many balloons can be released, and releases are never allowed under the flight path or near beaches or bays. Balboa Park doesn't allow balloons of any kind. NEVER do a balloon release with foil balloons. Look up the California balloon laws for more information on that.
Other types of dcor that are very effective for outdoors are floating columns, streamers and hi-flyers. Check out the Balloon Utopia website to see examples of this type of dcor at http://www.balloonutopia.com .
