Ballroom Dancing Is Back - The Tango, Cha Cha And The Rhumba
It was only a few years ago that if you mentioned ballroom dancing to anyone under
the age of 50 (no offence to anyone reading this) you'd probably get a raised eye brow or a stupid remark.
Fast forward ahead to today and thanks to a few high profile reality TV show competitions that have been going strong for a couple of years and the art form of Ballroom dancing has been tossed back into the lime light.
This article is a brief introduction to ballroom dancing for those of you who may not be familiar with the 6 main styles of the American ballroom and also to provide you a primer on how you can get involved and start learning to dance.
Six Main Styles
The six primary styles of the American ballroom are: FoxTrot, Cha Cha, Tango, Waltz, Swing and the Rhumba. This isn't to say that you must become proficient at all six of these if you want to have fun with ballroom dance but rather if you learn any of these you're on the right track.
These styles are what is used in ballroom competitions around the United States and across North America.
Learning to Ballroom Dance
With the upswing in popularity there's also been an increase in the number of couples and individuals interested in learning to dance.
Dance studios are the first choice since you receive one-on-one instruction and often get to meet other couples also learning to dance. The con to taking lessons at a dance studio is the cost but you get what you pay for.
With the newer generation of teachers there are also online and dvd ballroom lessons available. These can be a great supplement to private lessons or introduction to the sport. Order a dvd dance video to get a feel for what private lessons might be like then make a decision about whether you're ready to spend the additional money on private lessons.
