Of course, some attention is played to the head coach, coordinators and position coaches. Interestingly enough, though, people who are often behind many big decisions for the Ravens are also among the most underappreciated. These are the men who make up the football operation division of the front office. Below is a little info about some of these men.

Ozzie Newsome, General Manager and Executive VP: Newsome holds the distinction of being the first African American general manager in the NFL, but that is far from his only notable accomplishment. As a tight end for the Cleveland Browns, Newsome earned his way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As soon as he was done playing, he transitioned to the front office for the Browns, working as an assignment scout. By 1994, he had become their Director of Pro Personnel. He followed the Browns when they moved to Baltimore in 1996, and in 2002 he was promoted to his current position.

Pat Moriarty, Vice President of Football Administration: Moriarty adds both football and outside-world experience to the Ravens. He was a running back at Georgia Tech and played one season in the NFL for the Browns along with two years of training camp, first with the Browns and then with the Miami Dolphins. In 1982, he began working in commercial banking. He joined the Browns in 1994 as the director of business operations and stayed with the franchise for their move to Baltimore. His financial background benefits the team in Moriarty's role planning the team's salary cap.

O.J. Brigance, Director of Player Development: Like other members of the Ravens' front office, Brigance also has extensive experience as a player. He was a linebacker for Rice and then started his playing career in the CFL for the British Columbia Lions. He also played for the CFL's Baltimore Stallions before transitioning into the NFL to play with the Miami Dolphins, where he stayed for four seasons. He finished his career playing one season for the Ravens and two seasons for the St. Louis Rams. Brigance has been helping the Ravens in player development since 2004.

Eric DeCosta, Director of Player Personnel: DeCosta was a standout linebacker at Colby and turned to coaching after graduation. He was an interim wide receivers coach for Trinity College in 1993 and coached their defensive line and linebackers during his graduate fellowship. In 1998, he became the Ravens' Midwest area scout and worked his way to Director of College Scouting in 2003. He started in his current role in 2009.

Joe Hortiz, Director of College Scouting: Even though he didn't play football in college, Hortiz worked as an undergraduate assistant coach while at Auburn. His career with the Ravens started in 1998 as a personal assistant. Soon after, he started regional scouting and worked in the Northeast and Southwest. He was a national scout for the Ravens from 2006 to 2008 before being promoted to his current position in 2009.

Vincent Newsome, Director of Pro Personnel: Newsome also has playing experience, playing safety for the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns. After he was done playing, he became a scout for the Cleveland Browns. He made the transition to Baltimore with the franchise and worked his way to his current position.
