Band Saw Cutting, The Right Way

Woodworking, metalworking, cutting of plastic and other similar materials are typically what band saw cutting does

. This is as a result of the versatility of the band saw machine, which is used to accomplish such tasks.

For metal cutting the band saw blade used is either a bimetal or carbon tool steel. Carbon steel blade, the cheaper of the two can also cut mild steel when used at the appropriate band saw speed. While bimetal band saw blades which are more expensive, can cut harder materials like stainless steel. However, using bimetal band saw blades may be cheaper in the long run when used properly, as they can last longer than carbon steel band saw blades.

To cut wood, you can make use of carbon steel tool blades on your horizontal band saw or other band saws, which it can be used for (please confirm from sales guide or manual before using it this way). Some manuals that come with band saws designed for cutting wood inform users that they can equally cut metals too. This is often true, but such are soft metals like aluminum, copper, et al.

Attempting to work on metals like stainless steel, which is harder using this particular band saw will lead to the destruction of the blade as a result of heat, which was generated in the process since band saws made to cut wood run faster and this is not the case when cutting metals.

A tooth pattern on band saws is another way these powerful tools are put to different uses for wood cutting or metal cutting. Without these differences in pattern the versatility of band saw cutting will be some what limited in its usage compared to what it can currently achieve.

The general tooth pattern rule for wood cutting band saw is that the fewer the teeth you have per inch the faster, but rougher the cut; while having more teeth per inch will produce smoother, but slower cuts. While for metal cutting band saws, the general tooth pattern rule says you should have more teeth for every inch for thinner materials and fewer ones for every inch for thicker materials.

Horizontal band saw and the vertical counterpart are the two commonly used types of machines for band saw cutting. Band saws for cutting wood also make use of these models.

Horizontal band saw machines are often designed to accommodate one width blades, while vertical band saws can take blades that have various width sizes. Band saw cutting has developed over the years with more innovations expected in years to come.
