Banish those weaning anxieties with seven easy steps!

Dad of two and former chef Matt Hazell started The Baby Chef to help parents through

the anxieties of weaning, as well as showing the them easy to follow recipes. Here are his seven steps to banishing weaning worries:

1. Try to think about weaning in three stages with the first being the most important, as it is all about the slow introduction of solid food for your baby. It's vital that you continue with your milk feeds at this stage as your baby will get all the nutrients and goodness from it and will need these feeds for some time to come.

2. You might not think you're giving your baby a lot of food, but your baby will! Remember, looks can be deceiving and the actual size of your baby's stomach is only the size of a walnut or golf ball.

3. When you have decided it's the right time to start weaning, try to pick a slot in the day when you've got time. Try weaning at the lunchtime feed, so you have a few hours in between sleeps and feeds to monitor you baby and to take your time.

4. Start by giving a little of the milk as per normal, then stop after a few moments to try some puree. By doing this your baby will still feel a little hungry and not so full that he or she has no interest in the new food at all.

5. Make sure you've got the essentials. It may seem obvious but many busy parents forget key weaning products. You'll not only need a solid highchair and soft, shallow feeding spoons but lots of muslins or wet-wipes and maybe a sheet on the floor - as it's going to get messy!

6. This needn't be a stressful time so try to relax! You'll only get to do this once with your child so try to enjoy it and take your time. If your baby is not taking to the food after about 10-15 minutes of trying, continue with the rest of the milk feed and try again in a few days time.

7. It's important to introduce one food at a time for two reasons: first so you can monitor for any reactions and second so you can make a note of what he or she really likes.Remember what your baby likes and mix them with everything when you got to stage two weaning!
