Barbados Things To Do
The island of Barbados is located in the Atlantic Ocean just north of St
. Vincent"s and the Grenadines. It measures a little over 400 sq. km. and has some of the most amazing beaches in the world. The pink and white stretches of sand are ideal choices for a vacation destination when you want to escape the cold weather of the northern climates. There are no casinos on the island, but it certainly comes alive after the sun goes down with the variety of nightlife you can find there. Route taxis travel to all parts of Barbados, which makes it very easy to get to see all the sights. English is the official language and while it does lie within the Hurricane Belt, the weather from December to April is warm and sunny every day.
History of Barbados
Barbados has had a long and varied history. Amerindians from South America settled here in prehistoric times. They were followed by the Arawak tribe and finally by the Caribs, who lived in virtual isolation. The natives were forced into slavery by the Portuguese, but many of them were able to escape to other islands. There is very little Portuguese influence on the island and since they abandoned their efforts at settling, the Arawak tribe was left in peace for a long time. Their descendants are still residents on the island.
In the early 17th century, English sailors arrived on Barbados and claimed the island for Britain. It remained in British hands until it achieved independence in 1966. It is the only Caribbean island that did not belong to more than one country at any time in its history. It is now considered the 51st richest country in the world and Barbados vacations are popular with tourists from all over the world.
Barbados Things to Do
There is no shortage of fun things to do when you visit Barbados. You can spend your time on the beach, but you also need to get out and see the rest of the island. There are many different driving tours you can take in which you can visit the scenic seaside villages. Some of the country churches date back to the 17th century and will make you think you are visiting a village in England. Barbados has the nickname of "Little England" because the traditions of the people are so much like those of the mother country, especially the tradition of "afternoon tea".
The waters are calmer on the west coast of the island and therefore are the best choices for a family vacation where the younger ones can frolic in the warm ocean. Paynes Bay Beach is one of the most popular beaches on this side of the island, but there are others you may claim as your favorite, such as Mullins Bay, Paradise Beach and Brighton Beach. Crane Beach is located on the southeast coast and is a spectacular beach as well. Bottom Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean because of its picturesque beauty.
Tee off at the golf course of the Sandy Lane Hotel in St. James. This course is open to the public and offers challenges in each of its 18 holes. Golfers on vacation may also want to test their skills on the 200-hectare Royal Westmoreland Golf and Country Club in St. James or the Barbados Golf Club located in Christchurch.
Hiking is one of the best ways to see the fascinating scenery. There are Sunday morning hikes suitable for all ages that cover a different section of the Barbados National Trust each week. Led by knowledgeable guides you will learn about the geography, history and geology of the island. This is an exciting and educational activity for children as they get to see and learn about a different part of the world. The nature trails of the Arbib Nature and Heritage Trail will take you through the town of Spreightstown and a mysterious gully called the "Whim".
Horseback riding, scuba diving and snorkeling are very popular things to do and windsurfing is a joy to watch if you aren"t up to the challenge. Your Barbados vacation will surely be a fun-filled one from which you may need to take another vacation to rest up.
Accommodations on Barbados
The accommodations on the island of Barbados have a reputation for being the best in the Caribbean. Almond Beach Village is one of the most popular all-inclusive resorts. It is set on a former sugar plantation and there is an entire section of the resort reserved for families with children. The program offered for children is second to none. There are seven different compounds spread out over the 30 acres that this resort takes up and are set amid glorious gardens.
Cobblers Cove Hotel is another possibility for all visitors to Barbados. Babysitting services are available for families and there are all kinds of watersports to enjoy. Rent a sailboat for a day on the water or play tennis at night in the lit court. In addition to the attraction of the beach, there is also a large outdoor pool.
Turtle Beach Resort is the pride of the south coast of the island where you have luxury at your fingertips. Relax in a large room, take your meals in one of several restaurants and enjoy having a drink with friends at the Turtle Beach Bar.
Crane Bar Resort is located on an idyllic beach and offers an all-inclusive choice for your vacation accommodations. Here you have a choice of complete privacy, a stay in a historic hotel or you can rent a villa for the duration of your stay. Thus you have different options depending on your taste and your need for relaxation and privacy.
Dining on Barbados
Experience British menus as well as more regional and international cuisine in the bars and restaurants of Barbados. The taste of fresh seafood at the Fish Pot in the fishing village of Shermans is something you don"t want to miss. There are also accommodations in the form of various size cottages that you can rent. La Mer is an internationally acclaimed restaurant in Port Charles where you can see the expensive yachts moored at the dock as you dine on such exquisite fare as shrimp in sweet and sour rum sauce. Taste the elegance of the Bajan cuisine at many other locations, such as the Lone Star Restaurant or Italian cuisine at Il Tempio.
